About Us

Mission

The Cambridge Community Center alleviates symptoms of systemic racism and inequality by meeting the evolving needs of under-resourced and historically excluded youth, families, and seniors through innovative programs and services.

Vision

We imagine a Cambridge where every child grows with promise, every family feels supported, and every neighbor has a voice. Rooted in community and guided by local leadership, we nurture connection, spark opportunity, and build a future where all can flourish.

Strategic Approach

At the Cambridge Community Center, our strategy is rooted in two fundamental principles:
  1. Deep Community Connection: We prioritize building long-lasting, trust-based relationships within our community, ensuring that we are attuned to the specific needs of our neighbors as they evolve.
  2. Nimbleness and Adaptability: We remain flexible and creative, responding swiftly and effectively to the changing needs of our community, ensuring we are always able to provide support when it's needed most.
This approach enables us to foster meaningful engagement and deliver relevant, timely solutions. By staying deeply connected to the community, we are able to continuously adapt our programs and services to meet emerging challenges, ensuring that we can provide impactful support and contribute to the ongoing well-being of our community.

Over 96 Years of Building Community Together

In the heart of Cambridge, Massachusetts, there stands a beacon of resilience, service, and transformation—the Cambridge Community Center (CCC). More than just a building, it is a testament to the power of community, a living chronicle of dedication, and an unwavering commitment to equity, education, and opportunity.

Humble Beginnings: A Vision for Change

The Cambridge Community Center’s story began in 1929, when a small group of Black Christians, led by Reverend Edward K. Nichols, sought to create a space where children and families could find support and opportunity. What started as a movement within the vestry of St. Paul’s African Methodist Episcopal Church soon blossomed into an institution dedicated to uplifting the Riverside and Cambridgeport neighborhoods.

In its early years, the Center functioned as a hub of social welfare, education, and recreational activities. Through the economic hardships of the Great Depression, CCC provided essential programs, including health services, childcare, and skill-building workshops. The commitment to the community was clear—no matter the adversity, the Center would be there.

Growth Through the Decades: Adapting to the Times
Through the 1940s and 1950s, the CCC expanded both its mission and physical footprint. By 1948, after years of fundraising and determined efforts, the Center unveiled its $154,000 gymnasium and civic center, a space designed to serve as an anchor for neighborhood youth.

With each passing decade, the Center evolved to meet the changing needs of Cambridge residents. From hosting interracial drama groups in the 1960s to supporting the Civil Rights Movement, CCC remained a steadfast advocate for social justice. When the city’s youth needed mentorship and activities to keep them engaged, CCC responded with vibrant summer programs, basketball tournaments, and arts initiatives.

A Catalyst for Social Progress
The Cambridge Community Center has never shied away from the pressing issues of its time. In 1963, its leadership took a bold stand in support of the Civil Rights March on Washington, affirming the Center’s core belief that all people deserve equality in employment, housing, and education. The Center also played an integral role in hosting discussions on fair housing and urban renewal, ensuring that the voices of marginalized communities were heard in city planning.

A Home for Generations
For nearly a century, CCC has been more than just a resource—it has been a home. Generations of Cantabrigians have found their footing within its walls, discovering their passions, building lifelong friendships, and learning the value of service. Whether through after-school tutoring, holiday celebrations, or grassroots activism, the Center has remained a place where people of all ages come together to support one another.

The Future: A Legacy Continued
As the Cambridge Community Center moves into its next century, its mission remains as critical as ever. With ongoing renovations, expanded programming, and new community partnerships, CCC continues to adapt, innovate, and inspire. It stands as a testament to the power of people united by a common goal—to build a stronger, more inclusive community.

From its humble origins to its continued impact, the Cambridge Community Center is a story of hope, perseverance, and boundless possibility. Its journey reminds us all that change is possible when a community comes together with love, vision, and determination.
