“In Between”
Opening reception Sunday March 24th 3pm-6pm

The Riverside Gallery is pleased to announce the art opening for a group of local art therapists, all of whom recently graduated from Lesley University’s Master’s in Art Therapy and Mental Health Counseling program. The artwork is a mixture of 2D and 3D work, and is dynamic, bold, and reflective of the artists’ personal experiences and challenges. The art also portrays the humbling experience of working with clients in the mental health field, using art as a reflective process of counseling.

“When we got together and discussed our lives, we began noticing that we were all “in-between”. We talked about being employed and unemployed, being dependent and independent, being students and alumni. We began to form our own community that nurtured our creativity and brought us back to our art therapy roots. We met biweekly and used this time together as an opportunity to make art and uphold our friendships.

As we continued making art it became apparent that the art needed to have its own place to exist. In striving to make sense of our identities and the times when we experience the “in-betweens”, we were compelled to share our art with our greater community.

The “In Between” show includes art by:

Lindsey Beaver’s works come from a personal space within her heart. She is opening her own artistic journal to share with her community. Collage, watercolor, ink, acrylic, colored pencil.

Elizabeth McGlinchey connects objects and images in a visual flow to articulate values, memories, and friendships that have blossomed as she transitions in-between life stages. Collage, acrylic, colored markers, pencil.

Using humble sights and familiar materials, Mallory April Biggins' work explores the constant exchange of both interpersonal and intergenerational influences. Photography, textiles, acrylic, watercolor, ink.

Rhona Chang The process of making art is one way to represent the connection between the brain and the heart. I see who I am directly and honestly through my art. Acrylic paints, oil pastel, yarn.

Janice Lin uses art to reflect and to ruminate on various moments in her life. Acrylic paints, watercolor, oil pastel, collage.

Sue Schmitz deconstructs and reintegrates elements of her artwork into meaningful comparisons and relationships, thus evoking intention. Acrylic, collage, monoprint, intaglio.

Eve Tobin mixed media using plastic doll parts, paint, and cloth to represent a feeling of childhood and whimsy, and sorrow and pain.
